3rd Annual Summer Sensation Races Update (07/30/2004)
Hello Summer Sensation Racers!
We are putting the finishing touches on the Summer Sensation Race Schedule and it should be ready later today or, at the very latest Tuesday morning. In the meantime, here are some important race details for you and your team.
-3rd Annual Summer Sensation Races
-Saturday August 7th at Marilyn Bell Park
-Races start at 9am and go until 4:10pm
-All teams guaranteed three races
-Lots of Sensational prizes for all racers
This year we have some very competitive teams racing and I'm sure the races will be very exciting to watch.
As usual the lanes are wide and fair, as we're only racing four SRS boats at a time.
Each team is entitled to two on-site parking permits. Team captains are responsible for arranging pick-up for these parking permits either directly from our office or from Sunnyside practice site. Please let us know at the office so we know where to hold them for you.
Like the TIDBRF, the Summer Sensation will also be enforcing a minimum 50% female paddlers rule in the mixed division.
Please complete the attached waiver forms. These will also act as race rosters and need to be faxed to our office no later than Wednesday August 4th at 5pm.
As soon as the race book is complete we will send it your way!
Start peaking and get lots of rest!
Regards,
Blake
2004 Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival News Update (01/30/2004)
Happy New Year Everyone!
Kung Hey Fat Choy!
It's that time of year again when we start to get organized for the upcoming dragonboat season. Like you, we've been busy planning the schedule ahead, which promises to be packed with tons of excitement!
In 2004 the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival will be held on the weekend of June 19th and 20th. Based on recent emails, phone calls and other inquiries, 2004 is going to be more popular than ever! Last year the TIDBRF hit its capacity with over 200 teams and this year won't be any different.
In order to secure a desirable package, coach, and training time for your team, register and pay early. Last year's rates apply until January 31, 2004 (registration and payment must be received), after which any teams that register must use the new 2004 rates.
Please download this 2004 Pricing Sheet and Registration Form. The deadline for 2004 Registrations is Friday May 7. No registrations will be accepted after this date.
MS Word format: 2004 TIDBRF Packages Registration Form.doc
Acrobat format: 2004 TIDBRF Packages Registration Form.pdf
Below is a tentative schedule of important dates to mark on your calendar this year. An official schedule will be provided next week when we release the Official Rules and Regulations for the 2004 TIDBRF. One thing we can tell you is that this year the rules concerning the Mixed Divisions have changed. Based on the demographics of our participants and countless requests from many teams, the TIDBRF Mixed Divisions (Corporate, Community and Junior) will require a minimum of 10 female paddlers, NOT 8 as in previous years. We feel this 50:50 ratio will truly and fairly represent our MIXED DIVISIONS AND TEAMS. More details regarding this rule change can be found in the Official R&R's next week.
Here is the calendar:
Monday March 1, 2004:
Indoor pool sessions begin (5 or 6 weeks, depending on March Break availability)
-Due to recent Toronto District School Board price hikes we will no longer be using TDSB swimming facilities any more. Instead we will be working with the City of Toronto, who is helping us to secure some Community swimming pools for our indoor training purposes. Because of the late nature and uncertainty of our pool training operations this year, Early Bird rates do not apply for any pool training services. Updates and details will be provided as soon as they are known. Likely next week. Teams interested in using personally secured pools can still do so (see packages 8&9), as well pool training paddles from Grey Owl Paddles can be ordered for $25 to $30 (depending on quantity). Next week all official paddle order forms will be available.
Monday March 15 to Saturday March 27, 2004:
GTDBC Florida Training Camp
-The Greater Toronto Dragon Boat Club will be hosting its First Annual Florida Training Camp in Tarpon Springs FLA. In addition to dragonboats other disciplines of small boats will be offered, with instruction from the Best Coaches in the World! There is limited space in the Camp so book your spot today. For information please contact the Festival Office at 416-598-8945 or dragons@dragonboats.com. More details to be released next week.
Thursday April 15, 2004:
Captain's Meeting and Kick-off Party
-Dragonboaters love to PARTY! Immediately before the party we will host our Annual Team Captains Meeting where Practice and Race Packages will be distributed and questions will be answered regarding this year's event. After the meeting everyone is invited to the Party. At the Party, Festival and equipment suppliers will be there so teams can order uniforms, paddles, and win lots of prizes. There will be an admission fee at the party and all monies raised will go to support the GTDBC National Teams racing in Shanghai
at the World Championships this year.
Saturday April 17, 2004:
Spring on-water Training begins at Sunnyside
-Providing the water has thawed we will be starting our on-water Sunnyside practices on this date. Dress warm! Remember, "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear", M.H..
Sunday May 9, 2004:
Spring 2km practice race at Sunnyside
-Organized entirely by volunteers: Our World Class Greater Toronto Dragon Boat Club Teams. The purpose of this event is to offer Festival teams a chance to tune-up before the Big Race. Racing will take place at Sunnyside and the cost will be low. All monies raised at this event will go to support our National Teams at the World Championships in Shanghai this year. Details to follow very soon. This event can really help to prepare your
team for the Island race, a solid endurance base will help any team!
Saturday May 22 to Monday May 24:
Victoria Day Weekend Practices Cancelled
-Unless we have to reschedule teams due to inclement weather conditions, practices on these days will NOT be run.
Sunday June 6, 2004:
Ride for Heart - Practices Cancelled
-Practices are tentatively cancelled on this date due to conflicts with the Ride-for-Heart. All these practice sessions will be shifted to Saturday June 5, 2004. This may change depending on the Ride-for-Heart course, so keep posted.
Tuesday June 15 to Thursday June 17, 2004:
Tentative 'Extra' Practices

More 2003 T.I.D.B.R.F. & G.T.D.B.C. Updates
(05/01/2003)
Hello All,
Everything seems to be going very well down at Sunnyside (despite the not-so-seasonal first few days). With many teams - and even more paddlers - practices have been running smoothly.
As usual, this year there are lots of individuals looking for teams, and we know there are teams out there with short rosters. So any teams looking for paddlers should email us with their requirements (men/women, preferred side, etc.), as soon as possible.
Also, we will be offering individual coached drop-in sessions starting this Sunday May 4th at 11am at Sunnyside. The cost is $5 and everyone is welcome.
Steerers are always in demand, and this year is no different. We know there are lots of 'diamonds in the ruff' out there who just need some practice time. Therefore anyone looking to brush up on their steering skills and get in some practice should let us know. Tell us the nights you're available and we'll find some teams for you to work with. Like anything else, with steering 'practice makes perfect', and in the end it will make your team faster on race day.
While we're talking about steering, please keep in mind while backing out from the docks that the water is shallow there, and steerers should lift the oars to the surface of the water to avoid breaking the boat (and steering oar).
Lastly, the final price for tents has been adjusted to $200 (compared to the advertised $250 rate). Any teams that have already purchased tents at the higher rate should contact us to arrange a refund or credit toward something else.
That's it for now, keep on paddling!
Regards,
Fred & Blake.
More 2003 T.I.D.B.R.F. Packages & Updates
(03/25/2003)
Hello All,
Preparations are heating up (and so is the weather finally), for the 15th Annual Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival and the 2nd annual Summer Sensation Dragonboat Event. We are excited about the season ahead of us which promises to be a great one! With less than one month to go before we head out onto the water here are some important updates and key information:
First off and **important**, please re-download the following Local Team Package. There is updated information in the "Important Dates & Events" section:
- 2003 Local Team Registration Package
TRAINING SEASON
We have decided that because this winter was one of the most severe in recent history (there are still ice patches on the lake), we have delayed the on-water start date to Tuesday April 22nd, 2003. This has been out of safety concern (i.e. water temperature).
This adjustment will effect the schedule slightly for teams training on Mondays and weekends as we will now use the Victoria Day weekend (May 17-19), for training. Saturday & Sunday of the aforementioned weekend will feature regular weekend hours but on the Holiday Monday, May 19th all evening training will be pushed forward by two hours (eg. 6pm training slot becomes 4pm). This is to avoid conflict with the Fireworks display slated for later that evening.
We have recently received confirmation from the Heart & Stroke Foundation that the Ride for Heart (Sunday June 1st), will not effect our training. This is because Lakeshore Blvd will stay open.
The last practice at Sunnyside before the Festival, will be on Tuesday June 17th. After this date, Extra or Make-up practice sessions will take place on Centre Island on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
CAPTAIN'S MEETING AND KICK-OFF PARTY
This fun-filled event will happen on Wednesday April 16th at Alice Fazooli's (same place as last year). Alice Fazooli's is located at 294 Adelaide Street West. The Captain's Meeting will start at 6pm. We request that one rep from each local team attend this part of the evening, as we will be entertaining questions and handing out important information.
The Party will begin at 7pm and everyone is welcome. Tickets for this Greater Toronto Dragon Boat Club Fundraiser are $10, with all proceeds going to the GTDBC National Teams competing at the 2003 World Championships in Shanghai later in the summer. There will be prizes, snack, music and lots of fun to be had by all!!! Like last year there will be display booths for teams interested in ordering uniforms and other racing equipment.
More details to follow next week (i.e. ticket orders).
TENTS
This year, team tents will be $200.00 (plus 7% GST). Order early as there is only a limited number available. Please download this order form:
- 2003 Tent Order Form (.pdf format)
PADDLES
As usual we will be offering the most competitive paddle prices to dragonboaters. Order early to ensure you receive your's by race day (orders normally take about 3 weeks). Note that our low prices include delivery on orders of 12 or more paddles!
- 2003 Paddle Order Form (.pdf format)
OTHER MATTERS
So far this year's pool training has been going very well with over 50 teams participating in this program at 5 locations.
We just returned from our first ever Florida Dragonboat X-Training Camp. Taking place in Tarpon Springs, this camp was a huge success and will no doubt be a fixture in the future. Campers received lots of individual attention, exercise, sun, and of course FUN!!! Brochures for next year's camp will be available in the summer.
See you soon,

We want to thank our main sponsor Select Sandwich, as well as our other vendors for all the freebies during the day. Please spread the word of this fun-filled event, A RACE FOR THE RACERS ORGANIZED BY THE RACERS. This will surely soon become a local tradition.
If you have any comments or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thanks for everyone's involvement and support and we'll see you next year at the 2nd annual Summer Sensation. Please follow this link to view or download the official results of the weekend.

Fred and Blake.

GTDBC Summer Training As Usual At Sunnyside During City Strike (06/27/2002)
We have received some inquiries about the current strike by city workers and how this will affect training at Sunnyside. Hopefully the strike will be cleared up by the time training resumes at Sunnyside (July 2nd), but if it's not the following procedures will be taken:
1)All on-water practices will go on as usual.
2)Sunnyside Cafe has assured us that we will be able to use their washrooms, as the Sunnyside changerooms will be closed.
3)Paddlers can leave their bags and belongings in our trailer that will be supervised by our guard staff.
4)A 20% discount will be applied to our already low summer training fees while the strike is on. We are offering this discount as we are unable to fulfill our commitment of providing lockers, showers and changerooms to all teams.
5)If teams wish they can train in the mornings at the Boulevard Club.
We apologize for any inconvenience. We are doing our best to accommodate your dragonboating needs.
